Every fifth booking will be made by mobile in 2014

The mobile Web has already become an important travel planning and booking channel in the worldwide. 71% of users plan to shopping and making their bookings via mobile device in the next two years. Sixty-seven percent of travelers and 77 percent of frequent business travelers have already used their devices to find local services (e.g. lodging) and attractions (PhoCusWright). Google reports that hotel mobile searches have increased by 3,000 percent and that now over 20 percent of all searches are conducted via a mobile device.

The explosion of mobile applications has brought smartphone capabilities many consumers would not have imagined just a few years ago. By next year, more users will surf the internet with their mobile devices than on their desktop and laptop computers, which will transform smartphones and tablets into mobile travel agencies. This has the potential to fundamentally change the travel industry which is why HRS is further extending its mobile offer and is developing ever more innovative solutions.

The biggest advantage for business travellers lies in the flexibility that mobile bookings provide rooms are frequently needed at short notice. It has been found that spontaneous bookers use the HRS apps and three in four bookings are for arrivals on the same, or the following, day. This suggests that business travellers are relying more and more on the mobile services of HRS to quickly book hotels on the go, and it is this sort of functionality that HRS is seeking to develop.

The HOTELS NOW app launched by HRS in November 2012 is the most successful launch of a last minute app for business travel in Europe. Within just a few months, more than 500,000 iPhone users worldwide have already downloaded the app more than any other comparable app in this short time period. Europe’s leading hotel portal has increased its customer base with the new app with offers a vailable in a total of eleven languages.

To ensure the app continues to offer the flexibility that travellers on the move are looking for, HRS is broadening the offering from this month. Mobile bookers using HOTELS NOW will be able to book double rooms a nd have the option of a two night stay. HOTELS NOW currently offers more than 2,000 hotels in over 100 European cities in the deluxe, design, business and budget categories, and hotel can now individually set the new offers with discounts of at least 30 per cent on the daily room rate.

Jon West, Managing Director HRS UK & Ireland, adds: "The technological development and the increasing mobility will fundamentally change the travel industry. There has been excellent uptake of our last minute app by busines s travellers".
